| What is kosher? |
Frum in the Sun listing of Kosher Bakeries in Florida Kosher is a set of dietary laws originating in the Torah that govern both the selection and preparation of food. Kosher foods and products, must carry the certification of a rabbinical organization (Frum in the Sun requires orthodox accepted supervision) that has overseen the production and has certified the foods as kosher. In order to be certified as kosher, the food must be checked by a mashgiach, a rabbi who inspects all the ingredients, equipment, manufacturing and hadling of the foods and determines that strict dietary laws are followed. In the case of restaurants or food establishments there is almost always a certificate visible certifying that the products being sold are kosher and the certification is signed by the Rabbi who has approved the product(s). If you do not see the kosher certificate ask to see it. In the case of pre-packaged foods there are certain items that do not need to have a kosher certification, please check with your Rabbi, Synagogue or national Kosher organization for a list of products. All other products require a kosher symbol. Please check with your Rabbi or Synagogue for a list of accepted symbols. For more information on Kosher please visit the Orthodox Union, OK or other national kosher organization. |
